Srinagar

''Kashmir's most well known city, Srinagar, stands by the clear waters of the Dal Lake, and the rushing Jhelum. Srinagar is called the city of lakes, which has facinated tourist's from centuries, with its beautiful picturesque Himalayan backdrop, glittering lakes that are surrounded by houseboats and Shikaras and the grandeur of Mughal architectural. The capital of Jammu and Kashmir and the largest city in the state, Srinagar (1,730m) is famous for its canals, houseboats and Mughal gardens. The city itself is quite unlike most other large Indian cities for here you are much more in Central Asia than on the sub continent. It's a city full of intriguing alleyways and curious buildings. It is a tourist place where it's very easy to spend a few hours simply wandering - particularly along the old city streets near the Jhelum river.

There are woods of fir and chinar , pastures of flowers, mustard and saffron, fruit orchards, gardens and parks, and ancient monuments that add to the charm and magnificence of Srinagar. Srinagar is in itself a tourist center and also the take-off point for excursions to other places of interest.

BEST TIME TO VISIT

The hill station experiences an temperate weather throughout the year with heavy snowfall during winters especially between the months of December to February. The hill resort enjoys mild climate in the summer months from April to June.

PLACES AROUND SRINAGAR

Dal Lake - The prime feature of the lake is the trading of flower and fruits grown on the islands in the lake. The lake also offers facilities for kayaking, angling and water surfing.

Mughal Gardens - There are several well laid out gardens designed in Mughal Style, which are other important tourist attractions of the city. These gorgeous green gardens attracts tourists on a large scale for their numerous flowering plant species and water fountains running down its centre.

Nagin Lake - is believed to have been a part of Dal Lake. This small and beautiful blue lake is known also known as the “Jewel in the Ring”.

Shalimar Bagh - This garden was setup by Mughal emperor Jahangir for his beloved wife Nur Jahan, in 1616.. Later the garden was extended by Shah Jahan.

Gulmarg Biosphere Reserves - The reserve area is located at a distance of 48-km from Srinagar, to its southwest. It is famous for retaining several rare and endangered species such as the musk deer, and a rich and varied avifauna.

Chasma Shahi - Also known as Royal Spring, this garden was laid by emperor Shah Jahan in 1632. It is popular for its natural spring.

Houseboats - The houseboats on the lakes of Srinagar have well appointed rooms and are equipped with all the basic facilities one required for luxurious houseboat holiday.

CLIMATE

The hill station experiences an temperate weather throughout the year with heavy snowfall during winters especially between the months of December to February. The temperature barely exceeds 30 degrees C even during summer months(April-June). The ideal time to visit Srinagar is between June to early November and December to February.

HOW TO REACH THERE

Air: In terms of air transport, the Srinagar Airport is connected to Delhi, Amritsar, Chandigarh, Jammu and Leh by regular flights.

Rail: Jammu Railway Station is the nearest railhead and is connected to all the major towns and cities of the country including Delhi, Calcutta, Chandigarh, Amritsar, Pune, Mumbai and Kanyakumari.

Road: An excellent road network links the city with other parts of north India by frequent bus services of government and private operators. Private coaches and taxis are available from Jammu to reach Srinagar.
